Hello parents, students, alum’s, and friends.

My name is Tommy Loera, and I will be serving as the Director of Athletics for the 2015-16 school year. Once again, I’m very humbled to be in this position at my alma mater with the goal to provide our student athletes with the best athletic experience possible during their time here at Salesian.

The 2014-15 athletic season was an exciting one for all of the Mustang faithful. Being the first year in new leagues and divisions, the Mustangs proved that they could play with the big boys. Our fall sports programs all did very well in post season competition. The Football team entered the 2014 playoffs with a huge upset of number one seed La Mirada, followed by a huge win in the quarterfinals against Burbank, then falling to Downey in the semifinals. The cross country finished tenth in the division IV state meet respectively.

Our winter sports, basketball and soccer, all entered post season play, only to fall in the early rounds.

Once spring rolled around, the season proved to be a memorable one in Salesian History. Under first year coach David Sifuentes, the Mustang Baseball team gave us all a season to remember. Winning the Santa Fe League title, and earning a number one seed in the 2015 playoffs. The Mustangs marched all the way to the semi-finals, falling to CIF Champion Flintridge Prep in a 10-9 ball game. Despite the loss, the Mustangs held their heads high, put in numerous hours over the summer, and are now anxiously awaiting the 2016 season.

The Track and Field team had a season to remember as well. 2015 juniors, Jerome Hull, Justin Manyweather, and sophomores Rahyme Johnson, Nicholas Pickett, and Urael Blackshear represented Salesian at the CIF Divisional finals at Cerritos College.

The Volleyball team entered the playoffs falling in the second round to Arroyo Grande, and sophomore Julian Lopez fell two strokes shy of qualifying for the Camino Real League Golf Finals. The 2014-15 season was an exciting one for the Mustangs, but all of teams are looking forward to the 2015-16 seasons.

The athletic department would also like to welcome three newcomers. Salesian would like to welcome Jack Mai, who will be leading the basketball program for the 2015-16 season, Eddie Corona ‘94, who will be leading the JV football program, and Frankin Zhuang, ATC, who will be serving as athletic trainer.

In closing, I would like to welcome all of you to the 2015-16 athletics season and hope to see you at our events.

GO MUSTANGS!
